The District Surveillance and Enforcement Branch (DSEB) inspects restaurants, bakeries, markets, etc. to ensure that the food served for human consumption is safe and free of contamination. The frequency of these inspections varies depending the public health risk of each establishment but they can be inspected from 1 to 3 times a year.
The health inspections are graded from 1 to 100, with 100 being the best; any health violation found will deduct points. The establishments will receive a grade card based on their inspection score with 90 to 100 points being an A, 80 to 89 points a B, 70 to 79 points a C, and 69 and below will receive a score card that indicates the actual score as opposed to a grade card. Los Angeles County requires that food establishments post their grade cards in an area that is visible to patrons and must remain posted until the next inspection. Food establishments that score below 70 within 12 months may be subject to closure.
